Yes. Flights depend entirely on the weather. Rain or low clouds will ground the helicopters. Operators offer full refunds for weather cancellations.
No. Public access to the ice ended in 2019. You can walk the South Side Walkway for free, but it only offers a distant view of the terminal face.
Tour operators provide leather boots, socks, crampons, and walking poles. Some also supply wet weather jackets if needed. You must bring your own warm layers.

Saw the whales a few times tail and fin slapping. Seals and dolphins were coming upto us too. Kaikoura is booming with marine life. Unfortunately not lucky enough to see whale breaching though!
Very professional tour guides. Shout out to Toa and Rob. They adjust their climbing pace to accommodate and match that with the groups slowest member. Also, we were late for 10 mins and they were happy to wait for us. Thank you team! @Rob - I owe you an energy gel.
